We got a new student today. His name is Barney, and he seems to know another kid in the class, Ahmed. Ms. von Furt, the cooperating teacher said to me, "Uh oh, Giovanni's probably gonna lose a friend," referring to a younger boy in the class with whom Ahmed had forged a quick friendship. I'm not sure how it'll pan out myself, because our class is still extremely small (Ahmed, Giovanni, Jojo and Kevin...and now Barney make just five students). So far, there have been no serious behavior problems, no serious issues with motivation, or anything that vaguely resembles what many of my colleagues have complained about during our classtime. In fact, Ahmed and I were doing warm-up problems in his notebook today, and after we were done, he said "Mr. LeBon-Hsu, I don't feel like a snack, could we just do more math problems?" Needless to say, if the biggest issue I have had so far is a kid not wanting to eat but do more work, I have nothing to complain about.
It's strange to me how quickly the kids have warmed up to me. I suppose they've also gotten much more comfortable with the other teachers as well, but I feel like the kids, especially the older Ahmed, are very friendly with me. In fact, when Ahmed came up to me this morning, he came right up to me and said, "Good morning Mr. LeBon-Hsu, how are you?" I'm flattered, to say the least; though I'm not quite sure what the draw is for them about me. Is it because I'm a guy? Or maybe it's because I'm young? I would hazard to say that my approach to them is as more as a friend than an authoritative teacher, but I don't know enough about anything to make that call just yet.
